The Forgotten Queen
This is a handmade mixed media artwork.
Sometimes, some dolls take a lot more time to make than others. I start working on them and for one reason or the other, I have to stop. Usually, it is because I have not yet understood who they wanted to be. I call them The Forgotten although they are never truly forgotten as I see them every day. They keep me company, in their in-between state, patiently waiting for me to hear their whispers.
This little soul is one of them. I had no idea she was a queen until a few days ago and as soon as I understood it, I happily set to work on her idea and as usual, she was right about her choice.
She is handmade from a mix of new and upcycled materials. Her head is covered with papier mâché. I have used thick pages for the last layer and it gives her face an uneven texture that I find beautiful. I have drawn red lips and she has a single black glass eye. Her hair is made of blue/green felting wool styled in loose plaits. Her crown is simply some watercolour paper with papier mâché at the bottom.
Her dress used to belong to my daughters when they were toddlers. I have rusted and tea dyed it to turn it into a doll's dress. (non removable). I have added, patches and beads, some lace and the fabric is full of small imperfections. A pink floral skirt adds a nice and soft touch of colour.
The legs are made of two wooden sticks carved to the perfect shape for her. They are left dangling from her body.
She holds a poppy seed head in her arms (no seeds are left inside).
At the back, she is signed and I have added a little fabric loop so she can be displayed nicely on your walls.
Please display away from direct sunlight and keep protected from any contact with water.
She cannot sit on her own but can be propped against book on a shelf.
Measurements
She measures approximately 28cm long or 11 inches.
She is thin.
As a doll maker inspired by folk art dolls, I want to say that the fabric fraying, the threads still showing or the way things are attached to each other are all voluntary processes. This is the way I find that my creations are beautiful. This how I feel they are unique and original. It shows their frailties, flaws and their strength altogether.
I am working with upcycled materials mostly.
