What a strange bird
Handmade mixed media artwork inspired by folk art dolls.
This pretty bird is also a strange little one. Someone asked if she was a bird or someone pretending to be one, and I can definitely see why....
Her body is made with fabric. Her beak is made of paperclay, her left eye is composed of a button and a found metallic circle.
One of her arms is a paperclay arm inspired by vintage dolls.
To make her dress, I eco dyed it with leaves and flowers found in my garden. It gave a beautifully and randomly stained canvas where I added more pops of colours with inks, threads and beads.
Her legs are wired.
Finally, she has beautiful wings that look more like butterfly wings to add a bit to the odd feeling.
She is not a toy. She is an art doll, designed to be displayed. As such, she is signed and I have sewn a little loop at the back of the head.
Measurements
She is approximately 23cm /9.055 inches tall and 17cm/ 6.6 inches wide (wing to wing).
Please display away from direct sunlight and from any source of water.
As a doll maker inspired by folk art dolls, I want to say that the fabric fraying, the threads still showing or the way things are attached to each other are all voluntary processes. This is the way I find that my creations are beautiful. This how I feel they are unique and original. It shows their frailties, flaws and their strength altogether.
I am working with upcycled materials mostly.
