Seed Heart, a Forest Spirit
This is a textile artwork inspired by folk art and by my love of nature.
This little one is part of my Forest Spirit collection. The Forest Spirit Collection is a body of work dedicated to create little creatures that I can imagine living secretly in our woods, fields and gardens. When I create them, I always add a piece of natural element, this one has a red little watermelon seed sewn on her heart,hence her name Seed Heart. I like to think that she represents Hope as every little seeds is a promise of a new start.
She is made with coffee stained cotton fabric as I like the random shapes that appear when the coffee dries. I have also dyed her hands and feet with some dark green ink.
On her head, I have added some kind of antlers.
Her eye is a black glass eye.
At the back, she is signed and I have added a little loop at the back of the head so she can be easily displayed on your walls. She can also be sitted on a shelf against a book (she won't sit on her own).
She measures approximately 26 cm head to toes and 30 cm top of antlers to toes.
As a doll maker inspired by folk art dolls, I want to say that the fabric fraying, the threads still showing or the way things are attached to each other are all voluntary processes. This is the way I find that my creations are beautiful. This how I feel they are unique and original. It shows their frailties, flaws and their strength altogether.
I am working with upcycled materials mostly.
